Gold Rings: What is pure gold really?
Gold rings are by far the most popular type of rings on the planet, yet many do not understand how gold is measured or its real worth in weight. Gold is measured in karat with a K. Carat with a C is used to measure the weight of diamonds. Pure gold is 24 karats, which means it has 24 parts gold out of 24 parts. 24 karat gold is too soft to produce gold rings. The most common in Sweden is 18K, meaning 18 parts pure gold of 24 parts. The rest is made of other metals such as brass, silver, and copper. 18k is also known as 750, which means 750/1000 or 75% pure gold.
In Denmark, Germany and England, it is very common with 14K, also called 585, meaning 58,5% pure gold. The lower the gold grade in a wedding ring or engagement ring, the harder it becomes, and of course also more durable. Swedish goldsmiths have made the decision that 18K is the perfect composition because it is easy to work with, is durable and it has a beautiful color.
We at Rings of Sweden has chosen to manufacture our gold rings in 18k, 14k and 8K gold. The price veries considerably depending on how high the Karate is. Because we are working with different carats, we can offer our customers gold rings at lower prices even though the initial 18K price might seem expensive at first.
In addition to yellow gold, we sell rings in red gold, rose gold, white gold and even black gold.
How does gold become red, rose or black? It becomes simply by coloring the gold with other metals.
Gold Rings: Red Gold and Rose gold:
Red and rose gold are very popular and have a fantastic pink tone. There is no such thing as pure red gold or rose gold. Red gold is made by mixing yellow gold with copper and rosé gold by mixing yellow gold with copper and a little bit of silver.
White gold is also very popular and makes very beautiful gold rings. It is produced by mixing yellow gold with at least one other white metal, usually nickel, palladium, silver or platinum. 18K may for example consist of 75% gold, 10% palladium, 10% nickel and 5% zinc. To enhance the white tone even more, white gold jewelery is plated with rhodium – a shiny white metal that is very durable. If you have had a piece of jewelry or gold ring in white gold for a long time, the rhodium plating surface wears off and the original metallic color can show through. Once the rhodium plating wears off, it is possible to redo the finishing and rhodium plating.
You might not have heard of black gold, but it’s really fantastic. We have a collection called Nightline which is made of white and black gold. Black gold is produced by oxidizing an alloy of gold and cobalt at 700-950˚C. 18K black gold consists of 75% gold and 25% cobalt.
